We are excited about our 2014 pecan crop as harvesting begins this week. Georgia is the nation’s leading pecan producing state and the majority of the pecan orchards are located in the southern part of the state. The Fritz Farm orchard is home to over 225 trees that were planted between the 1940’s and 1950’s by Uncle Fritz Dockweiler and continued to be cared for on a daily basis by his great niece, Paige Dockweiler. Uncle Fritz had great foresight in planting the land in pecan trees as pecans possess more antioxidant activity than any other tree nut according to the USDA. They are also a great source of protein and are loaded with essential vitamins, minerals and are rich in potassium and phosphorus. So, next time you are in the grocery store, pick up a bag of pecans and say a little prayer of thanks for the many pecan farmers across our great state of Georgia.
